Findings in a new study from Queen's University have suggested that as more number of Canadian residents chose out a lifestyle which makes them inactive, the more the health system has to pay.
The study recently published in journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism, subjected that a person, whose has switched over to a lazy schedule accounted for a total cost of $6.8 billion which was spent in 2009, in other words, 3.7% of total health care costs.
Study author Ian Janssen revealed that he undertook all factors to obtain the figures, which included both direct and indirect costs of physical inactivity.
He asserted that in order to estimate levels of physical activity, he referred to statistics of Canada's Health Measure Survey, which analyzed the movements of over 5,000 volunteers using accelerometer.
He said, “This data was combined with scientific literature on the risks physically inactive people run of contracting seven common chronic diseases, as well as figures from Health Canada estimating the cost of treating those conditions”.
He emphasized that using mathematical models, he discovered that costs incurred to treat all those conditions accounted for more than $2.4 billion and the indirect costs accounted for $4.3 billion.
