FDA Extends Final Call On HIV Preventive Drug

FDA Extends Final Call On HIV Preventive Drug

It seems that it would take some more time before any concrete cure of HIV infection can be found as it has been confirmed that federal health regulators have extended the final call on drug Truvada. Makers of the drug, Gilead Sciences Inc, are of the view that there would be some three months more taken by the Food and Drug Administration to give its final review on the drug’s application.

It was earlier this month that the health regulators were given some additional material on the same drug so that they can review it fully, but now more time would be taken. It was in the month of May that a panel of experts had given it a green signal for those who are at the high risk of getting the lethal infection.

However, it is believed by some opponents that the drug is partially effective and there is a lot to be explored about the same yet before it can be finally approved. With the news hitting the market, it was reported that shares of the company closed at $49.64 on Nasdaq.

It is expected that the final decision would now be announced on Sept. 14 and in case the decision favors the makers, this drug would become the first such drug to be used for preventing HIV infection in the US.
