A charity that conducted a research on recurring breast cases has been throwing light on the need to focus on the same, says a new report to be presented at the National Cancer Intelligence Network conference in Birmingham.
It is being said by the charity members that there is a high need to locate as well as provide support to people facing return of breast cancer.
The study was carried out after raised concerns regarding re-arrival of the disease even after undergoing treatments. Amongst a total of some 1,000 women in Leeds, who were treated in 1999, most of them were at a risk of suffering again.
Breast cancer is an illness that affects one in every eight women in the UK, says the report. However, treatments for the disease let patients to survive for minimum five years or even more than 10 years. But, return is possible if some error occurs.
It has been told that a woman’s age, the treatment strategy or time of diagnosis may be promising factors for its recurrence.
Macmillan Cancer Support Chief Medical Officer Jane Maher concludes, "It is therefore essential that health professionals identify breast cancer recurrence early and take heed of this emerging evidence to better prepare breast cancer patients to help mitigate or cope with a recurrent disease".
