Sickle Cell Problem Needs Media Intervention

In order to erase sickle cell problem in the world, it is important that media should intervene. Dr. Esitetemhe Oshotse, who is heading the Edo State Sickle Cell Board, was also of the same view.

She said that there is a need to educate people about sickle cell problem and the task can be well performed by media. June 19, 2017 will be celebrated as World Sickle Cell Day, and till then, she wants that people should be aware of sickle cell problem and know why they are celebrating the day.

Telling about sickle cells disease, Oshotse said that it is not a deadly disease, but there is a need to raise awareness on the same. It will be beneficial that people get their genotype checked before getting married. It will be easy for them to prevent the disease.

Matron A. A. Ihunde, who is the Matron in charge of the Edo State Sickle Cell Centre, was of the view that there are many myths revolving sickle cell. One of them is sickle cell child does not survive. However, such is not true, as children, who suffer from financial problems are at risk of death. There are many more myths revolving the topic, which can be sought out by media.
