As per the National Marrow Donor Program, it has been revealed that more than 10,000 people in the United States get diagnosed with blood related disorders. However, everyone is not lucky enough to get bone marrow donor and this has put the life of thousands of Americans in risk.

Recently, the "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, but he was lucky enough to find a suitable bone marrow donor in his sister. Unavailability of matching donor is quite prevalent in African-American women.

The difference is quite vast, says expert. They were of the view that 66% for African-Americans are unable to get right match for bone marrow transplant, while chances for the same are quite high for Caucasians. It has been found that 93% Caucasians are able to find matching bone marrow donors.

Dr. Jeffrey Chell, who is CEO of the National Marrow Donor Program, was of the view that things are getting quite difficult for people, who need bone marrow donors. Situation will get tense if more number of people gets added in the donor register.

"The reason why there isn't too many African Americans, Hispanics, Asians or mix raced is they're under represented, there is not enough on the registry”, said Joyce Valdez, who is a Be the Match registry specialist at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte.
