A ballot conducted by the British Medical Association (BMA) has seen a majority of the public in favour of an industrial action, thereby declaring the same for next Thursday i. e. June 21, a recent report has revealed.
It has been found that there is a disagreement between the government and BMA over pension contributions and retirement age. The same has forced the association to take an industrial action.
Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary has also affirmed that the industrial action would harm patients as well as would cause inconvenience to them. But, the BMA claimed that it has kept in mind everything and ensures that emergency services would not be affected.
“The public should be aware that all GP surgeries are expected to be open and dealing with any urgent problems on June 21”, said Angus Cameron, the board’s Medical Director.
As per the general surgery registrar at the Victoria Infirmary, Tom Berry, the decision was a difficult one though. Since the action would delay the operations and other works, doctors would need to do balance the backlog of work.
The same has been accepted because of a large number of people in favour of the action, he added. A reformed NHS pension scheme says that young doctors would now receive their pension after the age of 68.
