Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) introduced in the mid-1990s in NHS Clyde and Greater Glasgow in Scotland have, with their hard work and joint efforts, brought a significant improvement in survival rates of cancer patients, as per a recent report.
A team of researchers from the West of Scotland Cancer Surveillance Unit, which conducted a study in these areas, found that the rates had improved up to 18% higher than other areas in the country.
While previously, it was noted that death rates in Clyde and Greater Glasgow were higher than that in other areas. The reason is that decisions were taken collectively as a team and not on individual basis.
The findings have been declared after the study that included some 13,722 women with the fatal disease.
Though, Project manager Eileen Kesson says that the new approach has only helped in excellent provision of cancer services. It is being said by Sir Harry Burns, the Chief Medical Officer that the team efforts have resulted in improved survival rates of those who have received a surgery for their illness.
"We are pleased these findings confirm our belief that this is the best way to deliver breast cancer care", said Harry Burns.
