West Nile Virus Alert

West Nile Virus Alert

Till now, only one case of West Nile virus has been registered in US and to be specific, the case was detected in Texas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which diagnosed the recent case, was of the view that though the virus has not returned, people should take all the possible precautions to prevent the disease.

The disease, which has infected 712 people in the US and took lives of other 43 people, can return anytime. Therefore, it is important that people should have complete knowledge about the virus.

The disease occurs due to bite of infected mosquitoes and its symptoms can vary from a mild fever to severe diseases like encephalitis, meningitis and specific body part paralysis. Some of the ways by which one can prevent infection are use mosquito repellant and the one, which contains an EPA.

Some other ways being suggested by the CDC are avoid going outside at peak hours, like in dusk and dawn. Both the time periods are peak hours for the mosquito to attack. Mosquito spray is also quite effective in keeping these infected mosquitoes at bay.

Mark Funderburk, who is a pest control officer, said, "We're getting calls about it but we're not spraying yet so we won't be doing that until we really get calls for that".
