It has been learnt by a recent report on the risk factors involved in the hydraulic fracturing that the process of extracting natural gas from the earth doesn’t trigger or boost earthquake. The report was represented by National Research Council.
In the report, the council nodded that the quakes or shakes on the surface of earth are rarely caused by man-made instrument. It was believed that the hydraulic fracturing often disturbs the balance of the earth that leads to natural disasters like earthquake.
Through the report, it has been informed that the man-made tremors have been felt about 154 times in the past 90 years. It has further come to light that these tremors were moderate in nature and thus didn’t lead to massive destruction or disturbance.
The research council has informed that most of the man-made tremors have been felt in the regions of the US. Although the report do says that the man-made tremors are moderate in nature, it doesn’t mean that we shut our eyes and let the world go crazy about the hydraulic fracturing. The report chairman, Murray Hitzman, a professor of economic geology at the Colorado School of Mines, was reported saying, “Is it a huge problem? The report says basically no. Is it something we should look at and think about? Yes”.
