A rock found in Australia last year by an archaeologist Bryce Barker is being dated back to 28,000 years, as per a new report.
It is being said by a team of archaeologists that the granite rock found in Arnhem Land in the remote north of the country could be directly dated since it is drawn in charcoal. A massive rock shelter titled Narwala Gabarnmang was containing the fragment of the rock, which is only accessible to a 90 minute helicopter voyage from Katherine town.
Also, it is its charcoal drawing that makes it unique and different from other art forms. Findings say that it is one of the oldest rocks on Earth, when aboriginal people were using sites like Chauvet caves and northern Spain caves.
It has been found that France's Chauvet caves are almost 30,000 years old and that in Spain are even older by some 10,000 years. And aboriginals had started using the site long back by 45,000 years.
Thus, archaeologist Sally May from the Australian National University said, "I don't think it will surprise anyone that rock art is that old in Australia because we know people have been here a lot longer than that and there's no reason to believe they weren't producing art".
