2,000 Species Make Entry in Red List

In total, 2,000 species have been added to the new Red List, which is meant for threatened species. Addition of the new species has brought the total number to 63,837, which includes maximum amphibians.

The list unveiled that 41% amphibians are listed as threatened species. Some other animals, which have become part of the list, are reef-building corals, mammals and birds have also been included in the list. Among all, the king cobra, which is considered to be the most poisonous reptile, has also been facing extinction danger.

It is excessively in demand for its skin for different purposes, such as meat, leather and for pet trade. The red list was being compiled by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and they have named East Asia to be the main centre of causing the extinction.

"A sustainable future cannot be achieved without conserving biological diversity, not only for nature itself but also for all seven billion people who depend on it”, affirmed Julia Marton-Lefevre, who is heading the IUCN.

Julia has urged countries to take united step to save species present on the Earth. She further affirmed that united steps will bring a change, and nothing much is going to change through individual effort.
