After every six months, an event is held, which looks to it, which one of the supercomputers used across the world is the best, based upon its speed and high-performance. A list of Top 500 supercomputers is released every half-yearly.
The list declared this Monday, it has been reported that a newly assembled supercomputer designed with IBM hardware grabbed the first position.
It has been unveiled that the computing cluster is at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).
And what to talk of its speed? It’s simply outstanding, enormous processing speed of 16.32-pentaflops, capable of performing 16 thousand million calculations in a second.
The IBM Blue Gene/Q system installed at LLNL has been assisted with 96 racks, 98,304 compute nodes, 1.6 million cores, and 1.6 petabytes of memory across 4,500 square feet.
This supercomputer has surpassed Japan's K computer developed and installed at RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science, with a processing speed of 10-pentaflop and core of 705,000. This supercomputer has been grabbing the first position for the past two times. Before that it was a chance grabbed by Chinese system.
Last time, US was ranked at the top position in November 2009. This year its Sequoia, a DOE computer installed at LLNL between January and April was able to grab the first position.
