HIV Therapy Linked To Low Bone Mass

In a recent statement, US researchers claimed that those of young men who are being treated for HIV are at a higher risk of low bone mass, in comparison to those men of the same age, who are not HIV-positive.

Study co-author Dr. Bill G. Kapogiannis of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, asserted that these young men included in the study were not HIV positive since their birth, it was almost two years before the study started that they were confirmed to be having HIV.

Dr. Kapogiannis said, “Earlier studies have shown adults with HIV also have bone loss and increased risk for bone fractures, associated in part with the use of certain anti-HIV medications”.

Further, he suggested that these men have been taking the medications for HIV since a short span of time, yet their bone mass is lower than men of their age group.

Hence, it can be concluded that HIV-treatment given for even a short period of during the age, when bones are still under development and bone mass is growing, can affect and thus lower the bone mass.

However, the worse thing about this is that this makes these HIV men more prone to fractures as they will grow older.
