Inamori Foundation Distributes Kyoto Prizes

The annually held Kyoto Prize, which is the grandest private award for global achievement, has recently awarded three people who have made amazing contributions to the society in their own different ways, says a new report.

The awards are organized each year by the Inamori Foundation, which is a charitable body. The foundation was founded by Kyocera Corp., Kazuo Inamori, which is a Japanese electronic component maker, in the year 1984.

Ivan Sutherland, U. S. computer scientist, was this time chosen for the advanced technology prize. Sutherland is the developer of the well-known graphics interface program, which helps one to avoid complicated programming and work directly by pointing a device to manipulate figures on screen. Also known as the father of computer graphics, he had brought the same innovative Sketchpad in 1963.

Further, the basic sciences prize was given to Yoshinori Ohsumi from Japan, who had introduced the vital cell-recycling system, formerly autophagy. Ohsumi was the Tokyo Institute of Technology’s molecular biologist. He made the developments of treatments for neurodegenerative diseases possible.

A third award of the arts and philosophy was received by Gayatri Chakrovoty Spivak, who is a known Indian literary critic. She has shed light on discriminations on immigrants and others by Western culture and has written an essay named “Can the Subaltern Speak?" as well.
