Culling Of Badger Causing Stir among Experts

The culling of badger has stirred hot debate in West England. On one side, livestock industry has appealed to the court to call for culling as badger has been found guilty of spreading tuberculosis (TB) in cattle. At the same time, the Badger Trust is asking to call off the culling as the culling would encourage the spread of TB.

The Badger trust has accused the livestock industry of not focusing upon the issue. The trust is of the view that measures should be drafted by which spread of TB from cattle to cattle could be spread. Lawyer of Badger trust would hold up argument with the judge of London's High Court over the decision of Environment Department and the Department of Food and Rural Affairs to go ahead with culling.

The trust has further warned that the decision would encourage many farmers to take up inhumane steps for killing the rodents. Previous study has showed that the culling of Badger can reduce the spread of TB by 12% to 16%.

Although the culling might prove helpful in reducing the spread of TB, it can also increase the movement of badger and thus can lead to higher incidences of TB among cattle.
