Poor Face More Stillbirths than Opulent

A new study, published in the online journal BMJ Open, conducted by a team of researchers from the baby charity Tommy has uncovered that stillbirths are more common in women in poor areas as compared to those residing in wealthy areas.

The eight-year long research has always found this gap between the two groups of people. The study has discovered that England areas saw a total of 44 stillbirths per 10,000 births each year between 2000 and 2007.

'If the stillbirth rates seen in the least deprived areas were seen throughout the population, there would be a third fewer stillbirths in England, nearly 900 fewer every year', said Jane Brewin, chief executive and colleagues.

The team has told that 10% of the population that belongs to poor suburbs faces double as high as the number of stillborns seen in urban areas. Also, congenital abnormalities caused due to such births are also higher in poor regions by almost three times that in rich parts.

It is therefore that the charity group now has been aiming to raise awareness amidst expecting mothers about the possible risks and the need to remain healthy during the pregnancy period. Also, it aims to conduct more research so as to find a way to monitor women at risk more closely.
