Metal-On-Metal Hip Implants are Not Recommendable, Says FDA

Metal-on-metal hip implants are almost useless to be received by any, since these would not provide long-term benefits, rather would cause harm to the health, says a team of health experts at the US Food and Drug Administration.

While, the devices are marketed as able to last long and a best alternative to ceramic and plastic models previously recommended. The claims are false and data from varied countries have shown that these leave patients to face lethal exposures, the FDA said.

Huge evidence is in front that these implants are more likely to breakdown only after some time as well as to release high levels of chromium or cobalt or other such harmful metallic particles.

However, laboratory tests had proved these superior over implants coated with plastic, saying these are resistant to wear as well as offer less chances of dislocation. But, complaints of inflammation and pain by thousands of patients followed by strict investigations revealed that the metal levels could be a possible factor of heart or neurological problems.

The FDA has therefore recommended its members to issue guidelines to strictly monitor all those U. S. patients who have got metal hip replacements. Also, it has affirmed that it would take some time to examine the difference between implants and patient groups before it could declare any recommendations.
