Increase in Beetles Worsens Wildfires

A recent report has unveiled that a team of scientists has been delving into varied variables so as to determine what actually the reason behind the occurrence of wildfire is.

Concerning the destructions being caused by huge wildfires, the team at the U. S. Forest Service had conducted an analysis and found that the hungry bark beetles have risen significantly in past 15 years.

The tiny insects are the ones that kill trees and cause fires in the forests. It has been found that New Mexico had suffered two record fires, of which one destroyed over 465 square miles and the other one burnt more than 240 homes.

It is therefore that researchers at varied government research facilities have been developing computer models. They have noted that along with strong winds and dry conditions that have caused the worst fire season in Colorado this season, the insects covering 40 million acres of forests of the nation result in hotter and faster fire burnings.

The team says that the species of beetle as well as the intensity of tree mortality and type of trees attacked decide the level of fire catch. “This is one of the big problems with trying to assess fuel hazards and how dangerous the potential really is for fire”, says Peter Fule, Northern Arizona University’s forestry professor.
