Doctors Wrongly Prescribing Aspirin to AF Patients

A shocking report revealed that some 360,000 patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF) are either not treated or are being wrongly prescribed aspirin. It has been known that the fatal disease affects some a million people in the UK, thereby making things all the more serious.

As of now, anti-clotting drugs are the best possible option to deal with the disease which increases the risk of stroke some five times. However, doctors are found prescribing aspiring many a times.

In the report which was prepared by a panel comprising of doctors, researchers, charity representatives, and Glyn Davies MP, chair of the AF All Party Parliamentary Group, it has been claimed that there are significant number of patients who are yet to be identified with the disease. ''It is extremely concerning that healthcare professionals often seem to be choosing the 'easy option' rather than better stroke protection", said Dr. Alan Begg, a GP with a special interest in cardiology, while sharing that there are many experienced doctors too who are recommending aspirin.

Apparently, it has been said that experts have underrated the disease and that's what pushed the rate at which aspirin is being recommended by doctors today. There is dire need of an AF screening programme so that those who are undiagnosed are being given the deserving treatment.
