In order to bring a decline in hitches often being found in medical devices, the US regulator Food and Drug Administrator has announced a new rule. The new rule requires that all the device makers have to put a special code on their medical devices ranging from hip implants to heart equipments.

This way, doctors and other medical experts will be able to detect the problem quite easily and will inform the same to patients. The device has been named as the unique device identifier (UDI), said the FDI officials.

They were of the view that the initiation of the identifier will make sure that affected equipments are kept aside from the right ones. In addition, the unique code will also take care of some other factors like no to include devices, which have been stolen and affected.

The FDA said that they have given 120 days time to people, who are associated with the matter. In the given time period, they have to revert about the new rule.

"We will be paying particular attention to whether the proposed rule follows a risk-based and least burdensome approach to implementing the UDI system", further affirmed FDA. Experts also think that the step is in the benefit of patients.
