Introducing a Soft Robot with New Biomechanical Legs

There is a latest research published in the Journal of Neural Engineering on Friday. With the invention of a new robot that features legs almost similar to that of humans, researchers say they are happy to produce a soft robot which is safe to be around humans. Those conventional robots that were derived from the concept of industrial robots were very stiff and strong. They were quite dangerous to be around human beings because if laid in a wrong direction, they weren’t able to distinguish the correct surface they have to land upon. For example, if there is a kid’s leg in between their way, they without distinguishing between the surfaces would step over.

This is for the first time that by using load sensors in their feet, scientists have put a small computer there, which would adjust its motion according to the type of surface. Now their legs would move in a more biologically accurate and energy-efficient manner. These robots can even make soft up-and-down movements with their legs.

As said by Anthony Lewis, who worked on the invention with Theresa Klein, both of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona, "In this robot, if you push against the legs, they'll give away freely, they won't resist you”.
