Recent reports suggest that countries including Adams and Boulder are suspected to again be infected by West Nile virus. This west Nile virus is subjected to infect majorly birds. However, it is also known to infect humans and others animals, including horses, squirrels, dogs etc.
The transmission of the virus is through the bite of an infected mosquito. Approximately 80% of West Nile virus infections in humans are without any symptoms.
In their recent statement, health officials of Tri-County Health Department verified that in Adams, a few samples which included mosquitoes have been found to be infected by the virus. It has been reported that the mosquitoes were trapped from two different locations: one at East 104th Avenue and Riverdale Road and another at East 124th Avenue and Holly Street.
Tom Butts, Director of Environmental Health for the Department asserted that they trapped the mosquitoes two weeks back. However, this Tuesday a pond at Jim Hamm Nature Area in Longmont was discovered to be containing these infected mosquitoes.
However, till that time, there were no such positive cases of infection of the virus. This year, so far no human has been reported to be infected by the virus.
