A recent research has shed light on the reason behind the growth of phytoplankton in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has been found by a team from the University of Washington that the large whirlpools in the ocean are pushing the growth of phytoplankton. Earlier, it was believed that long sunlight exposure was causing the North Atlantic Bloom, which involves turning water of the ocean from green to white and vice versa in every spring.
The study has been spearheaded by Amala Mahadevan, an oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Mass. "That timing makes a significant difference if you think about the animals that eat the phytoplankton”, said Eric D'Asaro at UW, one of the researchers in the Journal Science, while claiming that it’s highly imperative that timing of blooming is also taken care of. It is known that small sea animals hibernate in the deep ocean in winter so that they can feed on the phytoplankton in spring and summer.
It is known that North Atlantic Bloom has always caught the attention of anyone who enters the field of oceanography, and that’s what has caused extensive research to be done. It would be interesting to see what all is in store for one and all in context of oceans mysteries.
