Soon, the deadly skin cancer, melanoma, would become curable as researchers from Brigham and Women`s Hospital are studying a molecule which is believed to be effective in curing the cancer. The molecule named, interleukin-9, is an immune cell.

It has been found that in patients affected with melanoma has lower level of interleukin-9. During an experiment, the researchers injected interleukin-9 into mice affected with melanoma. After injecting the molecule, the researchers found that the immune system hindered the growth of the cancer cells.

The co-author of the study, Rahel Purwar, was reported saying, “These were unexpected results, which led us to examine a possible contribution of interleukin-9 to cancer growth suppression”. The lead researcher of the study, Thomas Kupper, said that in the coming times cancer would be cured by using immunotherapy.

Kupper is hopeful that the findings would prove helpful in treating cancer patients. However, further studies are required to be conducted before drawing any conclusion. It is hoped that the researchers would soon be able to find an effective treatment for cancer, which would help in saving millions of life. Every year, about 9,000 people in the US succumbs to death because of melanoma.
