A nine-year-old girl, Aillidh Kinnaird, from the Cowal peninsula in Argyll, was suffering from acute myeloid leukaemia and therefore her parents were searching out for a bone marrow donor. Finally, she was given the latest bone marrow transplant treatment using the stemcells of an anonymous American donor.
But we might call it her bad luck that immediately after the surgery in May, her immune system became very weak due to which she caught a respiratory disease. She was put on ventilator and was then given the kidney dialysis at Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow. She finally died on the following weekend: Saturday night.
The stem cells were taken from the blood of a newborn's umbilical cord because no other match was found. She was a brave girl but lost her battle with this lethal illness.
This grief-filled story was shared by her mother Leigh, 40, over Facebook. All her friends and relatives were informed this way. What she wrote is "She was surrounded by family and friends and most of all, love".
Her mother Leigh and father Andrew, of Sandbank, Argyll and Bute, her younger brothers are in great sorrow now. They hoped that this procedure would save her life but instead it snatched her away from them forever.
