Maternity Services Cuts Blamed For Dropping Rates of Breastfeeding

Findings in a recent research suggest that areas which lack proper maternity services, are the ones which have been encountered to have administered a drop in the rates of breastfeeding. It has been reported that the women in such areas stop breastfeeding their infants very early.

Statistical reports suggest that even as the NHS is concentrating more on savings, the consequences have to be faced in the form of drop-outs in the rates of breastfeeding.

Health data analysts SSentif said, "Mothers who live in areas where there have been cuts to maternity services are more likely to stop breastfeeding in the first eight weeks compared to other women".

It has been warned that one-third of the women stop breast feeding six to eight weeks after the delivery of the baby. However, it has been revealed that drop-out rates for different regions vary accordingly.

While in some areas, the rates have been calculated as 60%, in others they have been accounted for 6%, where mothers stop breast feeding their babies in the above mentioned time period.

It has been recovered that across the nation, 72% of women breast feed their infants. However, in case of Sandwell Primary Care Trust, in the West Midlands, it was between 2009 and 2011 that 56.4% mothers took up breastfeeding.
