A shocking death case of an 85-year-old patient has been getting the attention of one and all. It has been claimed that Michael Walsh lost his balance from the balcony of a hospital and fell down some 15ft. His condition got so bad that he died the next day of pneumonia at BMI Shelburne Hospital in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
While the hospital has accepted that there were some loop holes in their part, severe fine has been lashed on the hospital. Looking at the evidences the firm has been fined some £100,000 aftre they were found in violation with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It was found during the trail that sliding doors to the balcony were not locked, which actually gave way out to the man.
"I cannot ignore that this company could and should have done more to ensure the safety of patients and a man has died as a result”, said Judge Joanna Cutts, who expressed his shock to the whole incident.
While failure from the side of staff or staffing levels has been denied, it is believed that the risk attached with the doors cannot be overlooked. Moreover, Stephen Collier, chief executive of BMI Healthcare, has apologized for whatever happened with Mr. Walsh.
