2% Increase in Wales Dental Charges: Contribution towards NHS Dentistry

In Wales, patients seeking dental care will have to spend more now to attain the services. As announced by the Minister of Health, Lesley Grifiths, there would be a 2% increase in all kinds of dental services in the area.

A Band 1 course of treatment that includes services like dental advice, X-rays, and a scale and polish will now be charged for £12.40, which means a hike by 40p. Similarly, for Band 2 services that includes fillings, root canal treatment and extractions; the cost will now be £40.20; an increase by £1.20.

The top band 3 charge of £177.00 will seek no rise.

After 2006, this is for the first time, that a price hike of 2% has been laid on dental services in Wales. However, this will come into effect from September 1.

The additional income that would be generated this way would be used to improve the local NHS dental services. So, though patients will be charged 2% extra but this extra amount will be benefiting the entire NHS dentistry. This means the overall quality of dental services in Wales would improve.

As said by Lesley Griffiths “We managed to freeze dental charges in Wales for five years to enable those who may be deterred by the cost the best chance of good oral health”.
