Vibrio Cases Linked to Climatic Changes

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science researchers in the UK have revealed after studying that the climatic conditions being worsened day by day by human activities have been causing an alarming increase in the number of Vibrio cases as well.

The team concerned the number of infections increasing at a fast pace each year in the Baltic Sea and thus had conducted a survey. It was then able to discover that the ultimate reason of the rise was climatic change only.

It was observed that greenhouse gas emissions, which are on continuous rise these days, warming surface temperatures globally are the major cause. These have resulted in 0.17 degrees Celsius temperature rise from 1980 to 2010.

Sea surface temperature records as well as satellite data was assessed by the group, which have shown direct links to increased distribution of the Vibrios in the sea. Vibrio is a bacterium that comes either from raw shellfish or seawater exposure and can cause health hazards ranging from cholera to gastroenteritis. The viruses are generally developed in tropical marine environments.

Published in the journal Nature Climate Change, the report says, "Certainly the chances of getting a vibrio infection are relatively low, and more research is focused on areas where these diseases are endemic or at least more common”.
