Findings in a recent study suggest that doctors have recommended that elderly men need not to be screened for prostate cancer. Recent research proposed that men, who were diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early stage and were immediately treated for it, didn’t survive for a longer duration, in comparison to those, who were not screened.
Statistical reports suggest that during the year 2007 and 2009, a decrease in the number of cases of prostate cancer was administered amongst men aged 75 years and above by 25%.
It has been revealed that the decrease was due to the recommendations made by U. S. Services Preventive Task Force to stop screening for the cancer of men of the above mentioned age group.
The researchers said, “The recommendations led to a decline in prostate cancer screening rates among older men, which in turn, led to a decrease in the number of prostate cancer cases found in this group”.
The task force not only advised to stop screening of older men, but recommended that even young men should not be screened for the cancer. However, in case they were at risk of developing the disease, then they should be screened, like in case of men, whose other family members are diagnosed of the cancer at a young age.
