It has been found in recent report that seeing a policy to use a cheap drug for an eye disorder, which has been found unauthorized, health experts from the NHS, have announced the halt of the same.

As per the findings, NHS has been allowed only for the cancer drug dubbed Lucentis to cure wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, hospitals have been making use of Roche's Avastin, which is not reliable, neither is it certified, but is cheaper.

The AMD is such an eye disorder, which if left undiagnosed on time or turns severe, can cause a person to be blind. Concerning the same, it is being said that Lucentis, almost 15 folds more expensive than Avastin, which is approved as well as qualified, should be only allowed.

While it is being claimed that the price has been reduced so as to deal better, local eye specialists on the other hand are of the opinion that the new policy to use the cheap drug is showing lack of planned savings. Also, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists is worried that patients’ health may suffer because of an unlicensed medication.

Thus, the decision to use Lucentis only has been taken after a legal case filed by Novartis, which sells the same across Europe.
