Researchers Measuring Intake of Illegal Drug through Sewage Samples

Researchers have found yet another effective method of measuring the intake of illegal drugs in various cities of Europe. This time, the researchers used samples taken from the sewage pipes. It was found that the in the regions of Antwerp cocaine was the most preferred illegal drug. Similarly, in Amsterdam and Nordics people prefers cannabis and methamphetamines.

Overall, the whole Europe uses 350 kilograms of cocaine on daily basis. The researchers are of the view that through the recent research one can calculate as to how big drug market is in the Europe. The findings of the research have been published in the journal Science in the Total Environment.

About 12 cities of Europe were the main subject of the research. It is hoped that the findings would help in developing effective measures for preventing the use of illicit drugs. Initial findings highlight the increased intake of drugs.

Illegal drugs like marijuana are used by the drug addicts. The drug is illegal as it holds potential of adversely affecting the health of a person. In many cases, school going children fell into the traps of illegal drugs. The researchers are hopeful that the research would help in finding solution to the growing problem of drug abuse.
