Sharks Have Teeth-Sharpening Component Flouride, Says Study

Sharks are experts when it comes to biting and tearing their prey callously and the reason behind the same has been found by a researchers’ group at the University of Duisburg-Essen, as revealed in a recent report.

The team has unleashed that the component that humans’ teeth contain is completely unlike that in sharks’ mouths. It is fluoride that makes a human’s teeth resistant to acid, which is not naturally present but is provided as an active ingredient by all toothpastes.

Where humans have hydroxyapatite in their teeth, sharks already contain fluoride. It has been found by a thorough research of sharks’ teeth that this is the only secret why sharks have crushing, flat as well as solid teeth.

Inorganic chemistry professor Matthias Epple and colleagues have told that the mineral fluoroapatite or fluorinated calcium phosphate allow sharks to cut easily, while never realizing cavities. On the other hand, humans and other mammals only have the other component in teeth as well as bone. Flouride from sources like dental care mouthwashes only help them to prevent tooth decay.

“In the surface of human teeth after brushing, a small amount -- much less than 1 percent -- of hydroxide is exchanged by fluoride”, he added.
