Ecstasy has always been linked to some or the other problems. Findings in a recent study have revealed the links between ecstasy pills and memory problems; it has warned that ecstasy consumed in small quantities even can cause catastrophic effects.
Researchers of the study have cautioned that new users, who consumed as less as 10 pills in a year, were more likely to suffer memory problems, which were equivalent to those suffered by demented people.
Moreover, they have also emphasized that the problems may not be encountered immediately. Rather, the problems would be noticed only after the permanent damage.
The drug has been found responsible in causing damage one of the major areas of the brain that is linked with the memory, hippocampus.
The study included two different groups of participants; one of the groups included 23 people, who recently started consuming ecstasy pills and the other one included 43 people, who were just into the habit of smoking cannabis.
Within a year, participants who consumed ecstasy took on an average 33 pills.
"Given the specific memory impairments, our findings may raise concerns in regard to MDMA use, even in recreational amounts over a relatively short time period," says study researcher Daniel Wagner.
The study recently published in Journal Addiction has tried to highlight the side-effects of consuming ecstasy.
