A recent report confirmed that Paroled former police chief Jackie Selebi has approached doctors at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH) to transfer him to Jakaranda Hospital. He would be taking care of his medical charges, confirmed CEO Ernest Kenoshi. He was suppose to arrive for dialysis treatment by he didn’t turn up, thereby making it clear that he wants to cover his medical costs.

Peritoneal dialysis is often being done by patients so that they can do the same at their own places. It was some two weeks ago, he was granted medical parole and was even placed under house arrest. He could have easily got preferential treatment, but he refused to jump the dialysis waiting list of about 80 patients. He has not been keeping well since long time and his condition worsened after he was jailed.

"The decision to provide treatment was not taken on political grounds, but by his doctor, on medical grounds, after they assessed his medical condition”, said Gauteng health spokesperson Simon Zwane.

Moreover, it is believed that it would be a lot difficult for him to bear the cost of treatment, including that of expensive dialysis machines as he’s already under a debt of R17-million in legal fees.
