Diabetes UK has warned that hospitals' lack of awareness and negligence is putting patients suffering from diabetes at high risk of amputation, as they have not deployed any special team for diabetic foot-care.
It has been reported that National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence had suggested hospitals across the nation to set up multidisciplinary footcare teams (MDTs). Yet, recently Diabetes UK revealed the names of more than 80 hospitals in England and Wales, who have no MDTs.
Barbara Young, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, said, "Specialist hospital footcare teams are important for preventing amputations and can save the NHS money. It is appalling that so many hospitals are still not having one of these teams in place".
Young further added that it is awful to come across such hospitals, which don't have a proper approach towards a disease, which can ultimately lead catastrophic consequences. It is shameful to administer that these hospitals cannot invest in MDTs, even after being aware that these teams will help decline the financial burden on NHS.
Introducing such teams will also help in declining the rate of amputation encountered in people with diabetes. It has been exclaimed that the rate is 20 times more than that administered in rest of the population.
As per a new study published today in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, patients of breast cancer are able to manage their pain and other symptoms better if they have family and friends on their side to support them. The study was done with an intention to study that how social support can affect the patient's quality of life.
