Findings in a Thai study suggest that a commonly used spice compound used in Indian cuisine, curry, can be considered as an effective remedy for people at high risk of type-2 diabetes. Researchers have claimed that supplements including the compound, curcumin will help avoid the condition.

Curcumin is a compound found in Indian spice turmeric, which is majorly used in the country as a part of the Indian dishes and has been majorly exploited by Ayurveda as a potential treatment.

Curcumin has been stated to be a part of the ginger family. These naturally occurring phenols are responsible for giving the spice its yellow color.

The spice has been used for thousands of years to enhance the texture and flavor of the food. However, with time, it has emerged as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Moreover, it can help prevent the progression of type-2 diabetes and also fight cancer.

The study included 240 volunteers, who exhibited prediabetes’ symptoms. They were randomly divided into two groups; one group was given curcumin capsules and the other a placebo.

After nine months, people who were given placebo, 19 out of 116 had developed type-2 diabetes, in comparison to none in case of the other group.

It was concluded that curcumin capsules were able to improve the working of beta-cells which regulate insulin hormone.
