Genuine Smiling Lowers Stress

Genuine smiling helps in lowering the stress. As per a recent research, which has been published in journal Psychological Science, it has revealed that a genuine smile involves stretching of eyes and mouth muscles.

This helps in decreasing the heart rate, which further reduces the stress, which one has got by doing some strenuous work. In order to reach at the above given result, the study researchers said that they have assessed 169 university students and trained them in different ways of smiling.

Some of the smiling ways in which students were being treated were, to smile while holding chopsticks in mouth, a Duchenne smile in which eyes and mouth muscles are being used, and a simple smile, where no face muscles are being used.

After training them on the same, they were being asked to carry out different stressful tasks. It was found that those, who were being trained to smile, were better than others, who were not being trained to smile.

It was further being noticed that people, who were being trained in Duchenne smile were having lower heart rate, after doing stressful activities. "The next time you are stuck in traffic or are experiencing some other type of stress, you might try to hold your face in a smile for a moment”, said researcher Sarah Pressman from the University of Kansas.
