‘Rainforests Grew In Frozen Continents during Eocene Period’, Says Study

Scientists have recently concluded after a drilling activity of a seabed that almost 52 million years ago rainforests developed on frozen continents. These scientists have been reported to be drilling deep inside edge of modern Antarctica, which provided with them with evidences that palm trees once grew there.

These scientists deeply examined the pollen and spores and the remains of tiny creatures obtained from the drilled land, which provided them with an insight to the Eocene period, which existed 53 million years ago.

The study emphasized that earlier during winters, the temperature of Antarctic reached up to 100 C and during the summer, the temperature must have been 250 C. It has been suggested that a deep study of the greenhouse effect during the period, will help understand the impact of CO2 at present.

During the recent times, majority have shown interests in studying the early Eocene, often related to the Eocene greenhouse, more precisely, as the time is referred to as warm analogue of the present conditions of Earth.

A co-author of the study, James Bendle of the University of Glasgow, said, “There are two ways of looking at where we're going in the future, one is using physics-based climate models”.
