The disease, Alzheimer's, affecting more than 300,000 residents of the UK each year is again being hoped to see the way to its end soon down the line, a recent report reveals. Since, researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine have seen the same being defeated by a drug in some trials, though not on humans.

NIC5-15 drug, which contains a chemical that is usually found in pine cones, was tested in varied trials. Animals involved in the studies were given the same and positive effects were seen later, as per the team.

Alzheimer's is a common form of dementia that initially leads to symptoms like forgetting the right words and minor memory problems. However, an advanced stage of the same shows issues like severe confusion and personality changes.

While a proper cure for the same has not been found yet, it is being said that the drug is capable of averting the formation of amyloid plaques. And these only are the main reasons behind one’s performance going down as these coat the brain cells.

“This would be a huge step forward, but we will only know whether the drug has real benefits for Alzheimer’s after it has been rigorously tested in clinical trials”, said Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Dr. Simon Ridley.
