Thanks to a small exoskeleton which was made possible by 3D printing, a two-year-old US toddler – Emma – suffering from a rare congenital disorder is now able to lift her arms as well as pick up objects for the first time in her life.

According to a Huffington Post report, the ‘magical’ robot device - a prototype dubbed the Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton (WREX) - has given Emma enough strength to not only lift her arms, but also to draw and to pick things up.

Talking about Emma’s disorder, Emma’s mother Megan Lavelle said, in a video posted online, that the girl was born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a condition which severely restricts her ability to move her arms on her own. Further revealing that, at birth, Emma’s “legs were up by her ears and her shoulders were internally rotated," Megan said that though Emma gained control of her legs and other body parts as she grew, she still could not lift or move her arms.

Megan also revealed that the WREX device’s creators - Tariq Rahman and Whitney Sample from the Nemours Hospital for Children – specially developed a lightweight prosthetic, with the help of 3D printers, for Emma as the original device was too heavy for her.

Revealing that Emma calls the device her “magic arms,” Rahman said that when Emma put her arms into the WREX, she could, for the first time, “lift her hands up towards her mouth."
