Foundation Funds Indian Health Institutions to Fight Diabetes

Seeing the increase in cases of Type2 Diabetes over time and realizing the importance of urgently addressing the same, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation has decided to fund four of Indian health care institutions to carry out the task, a recent report finds.

As per the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF), India is the second leading country when it comes to total number of cases of the disease after China. Some 61.26 million people each year affected by the same. And talking about prevalence of the illness, it holds the third highest place, the first two being the United States and China.

Since early 1970s, a four times augment has come to be seen in the rate of prevalence of diabetes becoming some 8.3%. Thus, the new approach, including training programs for health care workers in rural areas and education to urban poor about the treatment for and prevention of disease, is now being introduced in the nation.

It is being said that the $1.6 million grant is an extension plan of the already going strategy of looking at unmet medical needs along with building community health care capacity, all of which was started in late July. Also, the report concludes that the award would inspire the development of models to improve existing educating technique.
