New Tool Found for Bat Study

A report recently published in the Journal of Applied Ecology has revealed that a new technology to study bat populations has been successfully found by a team of researchers at the Zoological Society of London.

The report finds that study of these organisms is highly essential since, in many regions, wildlife laws like the EU Habitats Directive are followed to protect the animals.

It is being said that the online tool available for free can easily identify calls of all species of bats. However, many attempts were made previously also to look for audio techniques that may help monitor and study bats. But, continuous failures were being seen because of poor standardization.

Echolocation calls, as per the team, are those sounds that bats make so as to navigate and communicate with each other as well as for hunting prey. "Lots of different measurements can be taken from an echolocation call, such as its minimum and maximum frequency, how quickly the frequency changes during the call”, said Charlotte Walters, co-author.

The reason why acoustic technology was only being searched for is that such organisms are so small in size as well as difficult to be caught. Above all, these are nocturnal, which makes it tough to identify them visually.
