During a survey performed by the researchers of University of Michigan Ann Arbor, it has been found that in most of the schools in US, Soda has been thrown out of the vending machines in cafeterias and stores. However, those sugary beverages are still available and students are even allowed to have them.
According to a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, in 2006 the percentage of older students who were allowed to buy soda in schools was 54%, which has reduced to 25% in 2011. At the same time, from 27% of younger middle schools students allowed to buy the drink, only 13% are left in 2011.
But one thing that seems quite strange is that other fruit drinks, sports drinks and beverages that contain high amounts of sugar and are at a higher risk of causing obesity to children in a longer period of time, are still available in the schools stores and even students have an easy access to each one of them. They can easily buy them and enjoy their drinks.
When we talk about older students of US higher schools, then it refers to the group of 14- to 17-year-olds, while middle schoolers are generally aged 11 to 13.
As a result, there has been noticed a drastic move away from traditional, carbonated soda to other, noncarbonated drinks that could cause more harm to the consumers.
