Komen Race for the Cure Raising Funds for Breast Cancer

On Sunday, thousands of people gathered at Union Station in the spirit of breast cancer awareness event. The event was organized by Mike Smith and was sponsored by Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Through the event, thousands of dollars were raised to help breast cancer patients.

Smith was reported saying, “I told people I’d wear a tutu if we got 100 team members or $2,000. We hit $2,000 and then I said I’d wear pink tights at $3,000, then a tiara at $4,000… I don’t know where it will end up”.

The participants were a mix lot of cancer and non-cancer patients. About 2,100 breast cancer patients took part in the event to help raise awareness about the lethal disease. Although the crowd was huge, as compared to last year, it had fewer participants. Last year, about 25,000 people took part in the event. However, this year about 21,000 took part.

Although breast cancer is a deadly disease, during fund raising events, people come together and have fun. The Race for the Cure is being organized since 1995. It is hoped that the event will continue to take place with the same enthusiasm every year.
