Published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a report has revealed that a device with the ability to restore one’s vision has been successfully developed by researchers from the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.

It has been told by the team that the device is beneficial over previous technologies, which provide only limited advantages to people with retinal diseases. The reason why the new device was able to help patient mice restore their vision is it helped their retinas to communicate with their brains.

A trial had been carried out, which has led the team to conclude that the device was helping retinas to send signals to patients’ brain. Retina is necessary for converting light into electrical impulses sending them to the brain, as per the findings. It is being said that all participant mice were able to mimic the code used by their retinas with electric-signal sending glasses.

“What this shows is that we have the essential ingredients to make a very effective prosthetic for millions of sight-impaired people”, said neuroscientist Sheila Nirenberg. While the pioneering development is also to be tested on monkeys soon, Nirenberg adds that humans might be using the same within some two years.
