Color Changing Robot Inspired by the Natural Phenomenon of Soft Organisms

Very soon, a robot will be created that will be able to change his color and in fact pretense his entire looks. This creation is influenced by the existence of those natural organisms that feature a soft body and are able to control and amend their appearance like squid and octopus.

Researchers at Harvard University after getting inspired by this natural phenomenon decided to create soft robots.

As said by Stephen Morin, a post-doctoral fellow and first author of the paper, “One of the fascinating characteristics of these animals is their ability to control their appearance, and that inspired us to take this idea further and explore dynamic coloration”.

According to Whitesides, the main aim for carrying out this research is to understand that why some organisms have different shapes and colors and what makes them change their appearance in different environments; while others cannot.

For developing the color changing ability of the robot, color layers were created that were later shaped with the help of 3-D printers. Further by adding silicon to it, these layers were transformed into a micro-channel and then once they were set up, color liquids were poured into them.

This way, the robot was able to impersonate animal behavior and obscure itself.
