Good News for Eosinophilic Asthma Patients

There is good news for the patients of eosinophilic asthma. During a clinical trial of GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) drug, it has been found that the frequency of severe asthma attack reduces when the drug is induced into patients.

For the study, about 621 participants were recruited. The experimental drug was administered to the patients for about one year. It was found that the administration of the drug helped in reducing hospitalization.

The drug started to show positive impact over the participants soon after three months of its administration. The findings have been published in the Lancet medical journal. While acknowledging the findings of the study, Simone Hashimoto and Elisabeth Bel from Amsterdam University said, “These effects are very promising and give hope to many patients for whom no effective drugs are available without significant adverse events”.

However, during the study, it also came to light that the drug failed in improving the function of lungs. Moreover, three patients even succumbed to death. Further studies are required to be conducted to make sure that the drug is safe to use. If further tests prove fruitful, then in the coming time people might be able to get access to the medicine.
