Researchers discover new family of spider in Oregon cave

Researchers have found a new taxonomic family of spiders in the caves of southern Oregon, Our Amazing Planet reported.

The new family of Trogloraptor marchingtoni spiders, which have hook-like claws, is the first to be discovered in North America since the year of 1890.

According to researchers, Trogloraptor marchingtoni makes use of its hook-like legs to grab hold of insects flying around it.

Spider expert Norman Platnick, who was not a member of research team, said he was very excited about the discovery of the new family of spiders a lot as it meant a lot for his field.

Speaking about the discovery of Trogloraptor marchingtoni, “It is just as fascinating to arachnologists as the discovery of a new dinosaur is to paleontologists.”

The new family of spiders has been named after the Western Cave Conservancy’s Neil Marchington, who found the spider and gave it to a research team led by Charles Griswald at the California Academy of Sciences.

The first name, trogloraptor, means cave robber, which was given to represent the hook-shape of their legs.
