For the very first time, genetic tools have been used to conduct census of one-horned rhinos in West Bengal. Through the census, about 43 rhinos have been identified. The census was conducted through the genetic analysis of dung samples. The exercise would give an insight on the population of one-horned rhinos and also provide a basis to plan projects for their welfare.

The census was organized by the Udayan Borthakur, the Head of Wildlife Genetics Programme. Udayan Borthakur was reported as saying, “These results are significant as according to the 2012 rhino census, conducted by the Forest Department using the conventional methods, there were 42 rhinos in the Park”.

Before using the genetic tool for conducting the census, proper permission was taken from West Bengal Forest Department. The findings of the census have also been submitted to West Bengal Forest Department.

The authorities observing the census said that the population of one-horned rhinos is quite less. Efforts would now be taken for improving the survival rates of the rhinos and for increasing their population. The report will be discussed further with the experts.
